A retail worker from Melbourne burst into tears after learning he just won $1million on Channel 9’s Millionaire Hot Seat quiz show.

Antony McManus, 57, won the Fastest Finger First round early on in the popular show, hosted by Eddie McGuire, which gave him $1000 and a lifeline to use later.

Once in the hot seat opposite McGuire, he then answered all five questions correctly, before reaching the final hurdle – a tricky one about classic literature.

Answer: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, published in 1844 

Mr McManus is the second person ever in the show’s history to take out the top prize, which he says has immediately changed his life.

‘I thought I’d be renting forever but now I’ve bought a beautiful apartment and even paid cash for it!’ he said after the episode which was filmed in May. 

‘Now I can stop worrying about the future for my husband, Ron, and me. I’m so grateful that the stars aligned on the day. 

‘So much had to go right for me to win, and it did. It’s still hard to believe.’

The Melbourne man encouraged everyone considering applying for the show to go for it.

Mr McManus is a fierce LGBTQIA+ activist and along with his husband Ron (pictured together) has been fighting for equality for the queer community

‘If it happened to me, it could happen to you too,’ he said. 

Mr McManus is a fierce LGBTQIA+ activist and along with his husband Ron has been fighting for equality for the queer community.

He and Ron were unofficially married a whopping 17 times at equal rights rallies, on radio and TV before finally tying the knot legally in January, 2018.   

The 57-year-old also is a treasurer for the charity Positive Attitude which provides food and company for those living with HIV. 

The popular Channel 9 show has seen contestants win a staggering $87,098,000 in prize money over the past 21 years.
