His lawyer Nancy Mikhaiel appeared on Mr Kleinlehrer’s behalf at Downing Centre Local Court on Monday.

‘We are getting him assessed for fitness. He needs MRIs and brain scans,’ she told the Daily Telegraph.

Hearings will be held on September 14 and 21 in relation to the alleged victims.

Mr Kleinlehrer received the Order of Australia medal in this year’s Australia Day honours list for his contributions to Emanuel School in Randwick, Sydney as well as supporting Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Ballet.

He helped buy the school’s site in 1984 and in 2007 the Aron Kleinhehrer Performing Arts Centre was opened.

He has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. They include three counts of assault with act of indecency, one count of aggravated indecency and four counts of aggravated indecent assault.

Mr Kleinlehrer was born in Poland, and immigrated to Australia from Germany in 1949.

At the time of receiving his honour on Australia Day, he said he was ‘overwhelmed’.

Construction is underway on a new building at Emanuel School which is to be named after his wife Helen, who died in 2015.
