Millwall 2-2 Wolves: Championship leaders held at The Den

Championship leaders Wolves conceded their first goals for a month, but still escaped from The Den with a 2-2 draw that sent them temporarily eight points clear.

In a topsy-turvy encounter that crackled from the start, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fell behind, came back to take the lead and were finally restricted to a point by a close-range Jake Cooper header 18 minutes from time.

Captivating in attack, vulnerable from corners and utterly committed to outscoring their opponents no matter how many goals it takes, Wolves have flair players all over the pitch.

Wolves conceded an equaliser 18 minutes from time to be held 2-2 by Millwall at The Den

Last season’s dominant force at Molineux, Heldar Costa, has been allowed to overcome injury niggles and find his form gradually this season, yet it was he starred on this occasion.

It was the Portugal winger who threatened to put the visitors in front with two efforts in the opening 13 minutes.

But just when it looked as though Millwall might be swept away, they took the lead.

Jed Wallace drove at Wolves’ three central defenders before steering his pass in front of Lee Gregory who slid the ball under the advancing John Ruddy.

Millwall could have made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when George Saville curled over a cross only for the stretching Aiden O’Brien to sky his shot over the bar.

The match was not without a feisty edge. Ivan Caveleiro received an early yellow card and a stern warning from referee Tim Robinson for cynically hacking down Tom Elliott.

Shaun Williams then experienced similar treatment after a challenge on Romain Saiss.

All the while, Wolves continued to press for an equaliser with Costa central to the action.

He struck in first-half injury time, but not before Cooper had headed a Shaun Williams corner into the side netting.

What could have been 2-0 at the interval was instead 1-1 with Costa forcing his way to the by-line and squaring for Diogo Jota to lift the ball home.

Cooper wasted another free header from a corner just four minutes into the second half, heading wide again.

That chance came after Ruddy had managed to force a Gregory shot side of the post as Millwall hinted at another quick start to the half.

Again, their proflicacy was punished. A fine crossfield ball from Jota, who looked so much more comfortable on the left than in the central role he occupied prior to Leo Bonatini’s arrival as a half-time substitute, found Costa bursting into the area.

Forced wide initially, Costa laid the ball back for Saiss to curl a 25-yard effort past Archer and send the leaders 10 points clear at the top ahead of the later kick-offs.

Conor Coady became the fifth player to be booked when he halted Gregory’s run and while Millwall wasted the resulting free-kick, they drew level 60 seconds later.

Unsurprisingly, it came from a corner and involved Cooper. When Shaun Hutchinson looped his header towards the far post, Cooper finally converted from two yards out, nodding downwards and over the line to make it 2-2.

Douglas saw a late free-kick palmed away by Archer as both sides continued to press for a winner, but Wolves will still see this as another point gained on their march to the Premier League.
