Mini-Versailles in San Francisco goes on the market for $30 million

A San Francisco mansion dubbed ‘Mini-Versailles’ is hitting the market for $30 million.

Koshland House boasts nine bedrooms, six bathrooms and two kitchens, and was originally built at the turn of the 20th century, before it was partially destroyed by the city’s 1906 earthquake.

Located in the upmarket Presidio Heights neighborhood, the home has been restored to its former glory by venture capitalist Ron Jankov who says he’s selling the residence because he ‘gets lost just walking around it’.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Jankov ‘dabbles’ in real estate, and purchased the property back in 2016.

He paid $12 million for the historic home – modeled on Versaille’s Le Petit Trianon – before embarking on his extensive and ambitious renovation.

Koshland House was originally completed in 1904 for Marcus Koshland, a wealthy merchant who specialized in exporting wool, hides and fur.

According to San Francisco City Guides, the housewarming party was a Marie Antoinette costume ball – an ode to the French Queen who lived in the original Le Petit Trianon at Versailles.

However, just two years later, Koshland House suffered damage in the Great 1906 Earthquake that killed up to 3000 people in California’s Bay Area.

The home was quickly repaired and stayed in the Koshland family until 1953.

It has since become a registered national landmark.

In 2007, the Koshland House was purchased by Halsey Minor, a tech guru who co-founded the media company CNET.

However, when the markets collapsed in the financial crisis the following year, Minor’s net worth plummeted and he abandoned the home.

The property soon became a favorite hangout for skateboarders in the area, who would ride through its unfurnished rooms.

The Wall Street Journal reports that by 2015, a squatter had moved in to the residence, and stayed for months, stealing any leftover artworks that Minor had left behind.

He was later evicted, and Jankov picked up the property the following year.

Meanwhile, a fleet of different designers have worked across different parts of the spacious home, helping to give each space a unique feel.

Several bedrooms have been completed with rich colors and bold fabrics, while one bathroom features black floral wallpaper and an opulent chandelier.

However, the property blends a luscious mix of old and new, with many spaces completed in a more contemporary style.

One lounge room features a pink velvet lounge, gold painted eaves and antique busts – a seeming ode to Marie Antoinette.

Meanwhile, a second living room is complete with wood paneled walls and modernist artwork,  appearing inspired by mid-century modern style of the 1950’s and 60’s.

Elsewhere, another living space wouldn’t appear out of place in a contemporary home, as it’s finished off with herringbone floorboards and white, Hamptons-style bookcases and windows.

The exterior of the home features priceless views of San Francisco Bay, and the manicured gardens call to mind those of French Versailles.
