An Australian one-dollar coin is now worth thousands to collectors because of a printing error which took years for anyone to notice.

The rare coin was printed in 2000 with a distinctive ‘double rim’ and could now be worth up $3,000, according to the Australian Coin Collecting Blog.

‘Check the date. It needs to be a year 2000-dated $1 coin,’ the blog reads.

‘Then you need to look closely at the circular rim of the coin – is it thicker than usual on the Queen side, appearing doubled?

‘If you think that’s the case then you might have a coin worth $1,000 or more. The value of your rare coin will now depend on the condition. After spending 17 years in circulation, some coins are more valuable than others.’

The so-called ‘$1/10c mule’ coin was made when the mint ‘accidentally paired the mob of ‘roos dollar reverse with the Queen’s head obverse normally used for the 10c piece’.

The smaller size of the 10c coin resulted in the thick, double rim.

Most of the misprinted coins were sent to Perth in 2000 but the error wasn’t spotted by collectors until three years later, according to the blog.

Some ‘mule’ coins are listed online for around $8,000, but auctions have only so far fetched as high as $2,742.
