Miss Tourism Australia winner, 27, slams beauty pageants for being ‘not important’

Model, 27, SLAMS modern beauty pageants and says it’s ‘degrading’ to score women in bikinis out of ten – after taking out the title of Miss Tourism Australia at 21 years old

  • Sarah Czarnuch was crowned Miss Tourism Australia 2013 after a wildcard vote
  • The now-27-year-old appeared on Amber Lowther’s podcast Fashion Avenue
  • Controversially she said beauty pageants were outdated for the modern era
  • She agreed that the swimwear section in particular was ‘degrading’ now

A former Miss Tourism Australia winner has slammed beauty pageants for being ‘not important’ in the social media age and said she purposefully scored all girls a ’10’ when she appeared as a guest judge because no one should be judged in a bikini.

Sarah Czarnuch, who was selected as a wildcard in the 2013 Miss Tourism parade, took the crown and went on to build a portfolio of modelling contracts, working with brands like Myer, Nike and Cartier.

Now 27 and focused on building her brand connections and 120,000 follower strong fan base online, the Melbourne-born model has shared her ‘controversial’ views on the beauty industry.

‘If I’m being completely honest, I really don’t think they do have a place in this day and age,’ Sarah told host Amber Lowther on the Fashion Avenue podcast.

‘The thing I definitely struggled with post-pageant was with my title, it was my job to sit on the judging panel and I couldn’t stand the fact I was sitting there with a scorecard scoring these girls in particular categories out of ten.’

She took a ‘mini stand’ as a guest judge and scored all of the girls in swimsuits a perfect 10, even though it earned her some looks from the other guests.

‘I did not think it was right to grade girls out of ten in a bikini,’ Sarah said.

Agreeing with Miss Lowther that it was 'degrading' to judge contestants, Sarah felt as though when she won there were more positive things to gain from a pageant

She was able to meet people in her year as the winner that she might not have ever got the chance to, but those barriers have changed in an Instagram influencer world.

‘When I won… this was before Instagram marketing so the exposure was great,’ she said.

‘The people I met during that one year of Miss Tourism were invaluable.’

However, now the exposure young ladies are looking for can be found on their iPhones and harnessed by a good filter.

‘If I was to do my time again I can’t tell you I would definitely do it,’ Sarah said.

Since her reign as pageant queen ended Sarah has flourished by sharing her modelling gigs on social media, giving people an insight as to what she does on a regular basis.

But trolling on the app has prevented her from sharing too many personal details and she prefers to keep things strictly business.
