The pair allegedly fled the scene before emergency responders arrived.

He remains in a critical condition with serious head injuries.

The entire street was cordoned off for several hours as up to a dozen police officers examined the crime scene searching for potential weapons.

Detectives also interviewed shocked neighbours who had rushed to the injured man’s aid.

The man lives on the street where he was allegedly attacked.

‘He keeps to himself so I’m not exactly sure what happened,’ one neighbour told reporters.

‘It was pretty upsetting to see. Old man on the floor, bleeding from his head.

‘The guy looked like he’d been beaten up pretty bad. It was a bit of shock to come home to something like that.’

Distraught relatives of the injured man were seen arriving at the scene after hearing the news.

Detectives arrested a man, 32, in nearby Modbury North two hours later.

He was charged with aggravated assault causing serious harm and spent the night behind bars to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or has dashcam of two men riding pushbikes in the Modbury areas between 2.45pm and 3.30pm along North East Road, Reservoir Road, Victoria Drive, Montacute Road or McIntyre Road.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
