Moisturising mistakes we ALL make – including putting make-up on straight after face cream

Moisturising on a daily basis is essential when it comes to keeping your skin hydrated.

However, nearly all of us are making big mistakes when it comes to applying our face cream – including not re-applying regularly and being too aggressive when rubbing it in.

Skincare expert Sunday Riley explained how many people don’t leave enough time between putting on their moisturiser and doing their make-up.

Sunday, who is based in Houston, Texas, said it is important not to put your foundation on straight away after applying your moisturiser, and instead allow time for it to settle.

Experts say that people don’t re-apply their moisturiser regularly throughout the day

She told Into The Gloss:’I put my moisturiser on, and then I go about doing other things, and then I put my makeup on so that my skincare has had a chance to sink in, and it’s not so wet and dewy that it affects my foundation application.’

The expert, who has her own eponymous skincare range, added that applying moisturiser regularly throughout the day is also key.

‘We have a lot of people who apply [moisturiser] on top of their foundation and throughout the day – a lot of professional makeup artists – to keep the skin hydrated, to keep their foundation fresh looking,’ Sunday explained.

She said you should put a small amount on and pat, in order to prevent rubbing your make-up off.

Sunday explained why it is important to apply your moisturiser gently, as well as making sure you’re being generous with your cream.

‘[Don’t] be too aggressive in the rubbing because if you have surface inflammation, you don’t want to irritate your skin.’

It comes after skincare experts Elena Elraie and Inna Orlova explained how moisturising in the morning is essential in order to ‘nourish the epidermis’.

The pair, who are the founders of KYPWELL, advised using a ‘gentle balancing moisturiser’, and said you should think of it was your ‘coat’ – lighter in the heat, and thicker in the winter.

They also emphasised the importance of including antioxidants in your skincare routine, which should be used ahead of moisturiser.
