Molly Meldrum pleads with singer Elton John to end their long-running feud

Australian music icon Molly Meldrum has spoken about his long-running feud with UK singer Elton John.

Speaking on Channel Seven’s Sunday Night program, the former Countdown host was candid in his remarks.

Molly, 76, seemed emotional as he spoke of the pair’s close relationship over the years, and his hopes to repair their fractured friendship.

‘We’ve had the most amazing journey for a long time. And as I’ve said we’ve been through the ups and we’ve been through the downs.

‘We’ve had the most amazing journey for a long, long time. We’ve both through the ups and we’ve been through the downs,’ he said.

The famed TV host clearly became emotional as he continued: ‘[But] A friendship like ours is worth keeping forever.’

Molly went on to thank the star for dedicating his famous track Your Song to him during one of his stage shows prior to their feud, with the music journalist left feeling touched by the gesture.

During the retrospective it was clear that the two men had a close bond, and it was revealed that Elton was one of the first stars to call Molly after his 2011 accident, where he was seriously injured after falling from a ladder at his home.

Music legend Molly went on to say that Elton has agreed to do interviews with Molly over the years despite the feud, but he hoped to finally clear up the bad blood once and for all during his Australian tour.

In archival footage the pair appeared close, with Elton laughing and joking with Molly, and the two men expressed genuine warmth for each other.

Despite not speaking about the reason for the feud, it is believed it stems from Elton’s infamous ‘Madonna interview’ which aired on Sunday Night in 2012.

Molly’s 2012 interview with Elton included what they both thought was an off-the-record discussion, in which the Rocket Man star labelled Madonna a ‘fairground stripper’ and a ‘nightmare’.

Molly, who famously does not preview any of his celebrity interviews before they go to air, assumed the footage would never be used.

But it was broadcast and made headlines across the world.

That incident caused a falling out between the pair that has never been healed.

‘I apologise to Elton, I’m sorry all this mess happened, but it wasn’t my fault,’ Molly told the Herald Sun.

Molly, who is considered one of Australia’s most iconic music journalists, also apologised to Madonna over the interview.

The American singer, 61, accepted his apology and gave him front-row tickets to one of her Australian concerts last year, as a gesture of forgiveness.

Elton, 72, will tour Australia in late November and Molly hopes to meet up with him at his concert at Hanging Rock and settle their differences.

‘If he’s still angry with me, he can push me off the bloody rock,’ Molly declared.
