He has suffered from poor health in recent years, and has was even photographed using a wheelchair back in December.

But Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum was back on his feet on Tuesday for the opening of his own statue outside the The Corner Hotel in Richmond, Melbourne.

Walking with the assistance of a cane, the 75-year-old former Countdown host looked in lively spirits as he unveiled his bronze likeness.

Molly, who is known for his catchphrase, ‘Do yourself a favour’, wore black trousers and a white shirt which he left partially unbuttoned.

He completed his look with Chelsea boots, several rings and an eye-catching purple tie, and also sported his signature cowboy hat.

The Australian music legend looked delighted by his statue, which was commissioned to honour his contributions to popular culture.

The sculptor, Louis Lauman, told ABC News that Molly was initially ‘ambivalent’ about the project before eventually warming to the idea.

Louis said: ‘It’s really something much more special when someone’s still with us if you can get to know them, which I certainly did. You’re being immortalised. It’s kind of strange for a living person.’

Meanwhile, Molly reportedly joked at the event that he only agreed to pose for a statue if he could carry his dog.

Perhaps this was true, as the finished product shows the former TV presenter proudly holding his dog Ziggy.

Several media organisations were present at the unveiling, including Ten Eyewitness News which sent its roving reporter Georgia Love.

The former Bachelorette star was seen interviewing Molly before having her photo taken with him.

The music legend, who was the subject of acclaimed TV mini-series Molly in 2016, has suffered from poor health in recent years.

In December 2011, Molly suffered life-threatening injuries after he fell from a ladder at his Melbourne home.

He fractured his skull, punctured his lungs and broke his ribs in the accident.

In January 2016, he slipped outside a hotel in Bangkok and dislodged a vertebrae, requiring emergency surgery.
