Jumping up and down and waving his arms in the air, an 11-year-old boy desperately flags down a police helicopter after six hours lost in a forest in the dark.

The youngster was separated from five family members during a fishing trip in Victoria’s Ottway Ranges on Wednesday.

His panicked relatives called police who used a helicopter with a night-vision camera to track him down.

The terrified boy was found uninjured at 10.30pm after his location was pinpointed by the infrared technology.

Inspector Craig Shepherd said disaster had been averted.

‘The Air Wing located the boy in pitch black conditions among trees and mountains using night vision and forward looking infrared equipment,’ he said.

‘It had been approaching seven hours that this young boy had been separated from his family and this situation could have potentially ended very differently.’

The boy, from Colac, was found near Westwicks Road after a search which included rescue crews on foot and motorbikes.
