A French supermarket security guard has been fired for ‘unacceptable violence’ after he was caught on camera beating a woman accused of shoplifting.

The shocking act of violence erupted early Tuesday evening at the Carrefour Market in Mantes-la-Jolie, Yvelines, roughly 35 miles west of Paris.

Footage circulating on social media shows how a security guard punched the woman in the face and grabbed her neck with both hands, before pushing her to the ground.

‘Let go of me, let go of me,’ the shopper yelled in a panic as the guard demanded that she remove her bag. He is heard shouting ‘take out what you put in the bag!’ and asking a colleague to ‘call the police’.

The woman, who was screaming and struggling to escape his grasp, appears to have slapped her attacker. The guard seemingly responded by hitting her back and asking: ‘Why are you hitting me?’

The woman had allegedly stolen bottles of alcohol, a police source told 78 News, adding that she was ‘the subject of a CRPC (appearance on prior admission of guilt) prosecution by the public prosecutor’.

The supermarket, however, has condemned the security guard’s ‘intolerable act’ of violence, which it says is not in aligned with Carrefour’s values.

The store manager has reportedly filed a complaint against the guard and his employer, and will be terminating his contract with the grocer.

The violent attack occurred at the checkout at Carrefour Market in Mantes-la-Jolie around 6.30pm Tuesday.

The clip circulating online, which does not show the moments leading up to the alleged assault, appears to show a security guard beating a customer whom he suspected of theft.

Although the woman allegedly stole from the supermarket, the company has said the guard’s ‘gesture is intolerable’.

‘Carrefour condemns in the strongest possible terms the unacceptable violence suffered by this young woman in one of our franchised stores. This intolerable act is contrary to Carrefour’s values,’ the French retail group posted on X.

‘The manager of this store is filing a complaint against the security guard and the security company that employs him, and is terminating his contract.’

Carrefour added that police are investigating the incident and working to ‘determine the exact circumstances of what we can see in the video’

‘Our franchisee is fully cooperating with the authorities,’ the statement added.

Management at the supermarket’s Mantes-la-Jolie franchise declined the news outlet’s request for comment.

The private security agent’s code of ethics states that guards must ‘never use violence, even minor violence’, Le Parisien reports.

If a security guard is unable to resolve a conflict ‘amicably’ with a individual who ‘does not want to submit to legally carried out checks and inspections’, the agent must call police.

The code states that security guards can only strike another person in an instance of self-defence. The police investigation will aim to determine whether or not the officer acted in self-defence during the alleged assault at Carrefour Market.
