Moment Julie Bishop nearly breaks down as she stands down as Foreign Minister

The most popular PM Australia never had: Julie Bishop fights back tears as she officially quits as Foreign Minister – and reveals her most ’emotional moment’ in the role

Outgoing Foreign Minister Julie Bishop fought back tears as she announced she will stay in Parliament despite missing out on the leadership.

Ms Bishop will continue as the member for Curtin and sit on the backbench, despite recent speculation she could immediately leave Parliament.

The popular South Australian refused to rule out becoming the next Governor-General, but said she was ‘optimistic about my future, whatever it may hold.’

‘It’s far too early to even contemplate what I might do, but I will have plenty of time to reflect on my options and reflect on what has been an extraordinary time,’ Ms Bishop told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

During her emotional speech she described former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull as a ‘remarkable man’, and spoke about those killed on downed airliner MH17.

‘It was the most emotional moment of my life,’ Ms Bishop said of the incident, and called on her successor Marise Payne to continue to fight for justice for the victims.
