A man found tens of thousands of dollars on the sidewalk outside an ATM machine by a Michigan credit union on Tuesday – and handed it in.

George Condash discovered the box of $27,000 sitting on the floor outside the Westland Federal Credit Union.

Surveillance footage saw him pick the box up and place it in the back of his car before driving off.

‘I drove right around here and it was sitting about right here,’ Condash said. ‘Well, first, I just thought it was trash. For some reason it hit me that, “Why don’t I just pick this up so no one else has to swerve around it?”‘

He placed the case of cash into his car and pulled straight into a parking space right next to the bank.

He took the missing box of cash inside, and placed it on the counter.

‘I said, “Is there a reward for $40,000?” And I put it on their counter and they just looked dumbfounded,’ Condash said in an interview with WDIV.

‘It’s not mine and any honest person, I would hope, would take it back in,’ Condash said when asked why he decided to do the right thing.

It turns out that an armored security guard who was delivering cash to the credit union left one of the boxes on the side of the street by mistake.

The surveillance video shows that the box was left untouched for almost 20 minutes before Condash got out of his car to take a look.

A tag on the side of the box indicated there was $40,000 inside.

‘That was a lot of money that could have resulted in a significant loss, and we just wanted to give him a token of our appreciation,’ the bank’s cash manager Alicia Stewart told CNN.

The bank gave Condash a cash reward of his own.

Staff say that if he had not brought the money inside and instead driven off with the windfall, the police would have been called and Condash would have been tracked down through his car license plate that appeared on the surveillance footage.

‘I would hope that the average person would turn that in, but not everybody thinks that way,’ Stewart said. ‘Not everybody is cognizant of the cameras around them.’
