  • The police officer was taken to Wakefield hospital with a head injury 

A police officer has been punched in the face during a street brawl in Adelaide on Friday night.

The officer was attempting to break up fight between two groups outside the McDonalds on Hindley St around 8.15pm.

A 17-year-old boy from Fulham Gardens was arrested and charged with assault and aggravated assault.

South Australian Police Association President Mark Carroll told 7 News assaults on police are a ‘reality’ but still a concern.

‘Assaults on police are a reality of front-line police work, but it doesn’t make it less distressing or of less concern,’ he said.

‘He was an officer going about his work, and the courts are in a position to apply appropriate penalties for those who assault police.’ 

The teenager was granted bail and is to appear in the Adelaide Youth Court in November.

Police confirmed the officer was treated at Wakefield Hospital for a head injury. 

The incident comes after 7 News revealed nearly 2,500 cases of assault against police have occurred in the last year.

Up to six officers are being assaulted every day.
