An obese kitty living in a basement has been saved from cat-astrophe after his weight ballooned to the equivalent of a small child.

Ginger tabby Kroshik – meaning ‘Crumbs’ in Russian – had been living in the basement of a hospital where he was fed by well-meaning staff on biscuits and soup.

It is believed he had taken up residence there after being abandoned by his owners.

But the pampered pet became more flabby than tabby, literally tipping the scales at a whopping 38lbs, or nearly 3 stone.

Now the real-life fat cat has been put on a diet after being rescued by animal refuge workers in Perm, Russia.

Kroshik, so-called because of his ability to hoover up every scrap of food, was so overweight he was unable to walk.

Vets at the city’s Matroskin Shelter even struggled to perform an ultrasound scan on the stray because of his thick layers of fat.

They told local media: ‘Kroshik’s story is an extremely rare case when someone loved a cat so much that they fed him to such a state.’

Centre volunteers have put him on a strict diet and plan to give him workouts on a treadmill once he can walk again.

They are hopeful that the cat can lose three-quarters of his weight.

The plan is for the moggie to eventually reach a much healthier 10lbs.

This will mean shedding up to 150 grams every week until he is ‘feline’ fine again.
