Up to a month’s rain could fall over the next two days as the remains of a tropical hurricane batter the country.
After a dry and bright start, a band of rain is due to move across Britain later today – followed by heavy rain overnight and throughout tomorrow.
The worst conditions are expected in southern England and South Wales – where a weather warning has been issued – with up to 70mm (2¾in) of rain predicted between midnight and 3pm tomorrow.

The September average rainfall for the two areas is 80 to 100mm (3-4 in).
The warning covers almost all of the south coast, apart from the east of Kent, the West and South West, and South Wales.
Flooding of some homes and businesses is thought to be ‘likely’.

The bands of heavy rain are linked to the remains of Hurricane Humberto, which affected Bermuda last week.
Meteorological Office spokesman Luke Miall said winds in the South West could reach 35mph today, and 40mph – gale force – tomorrow.
Maximum daytime temperatures of around 20C (68F) are expected over the next three days in many areas of the country.
The usual late September average is 19C (66F) in the South, falling to 16-17C (61-63F) further north.
The Met Office expects the unsettled weather to continue for the rest of the month.
