Horror crash kills two in fiery multi-vehicle collision that left four others injured while two women escape their rear-ended cars

Two people have been killed and another four are injured after a fiery multi-vehicle crash on one of Sydney’s busiest motorways on Tuesday afternoon. 

Emergency services rushed to the M1 Motorway, just 100 metres north of Mooney Mooney Creek, about 4.50pm following reports of a crash involving a truck and two cars.

The two people who have died are yet to be identified.

In a statement, NSW Police said officers arrived at the scene to find a truck had crashed into the back of two cars, and caught fire.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said another car had ‘gone under’ the truck.

NSW Police confirmed two people have died, while the ambulance spokesman said four patients were being treated. 

Pictures from the scene show the vehicles sustained significant damage. 

Firefighters extinguished the flames but it was too late to save the occupants. 

Two women, aged 44 and 75, managed to escape from their rear-ended cars with only minor injuries.

They were taken with another person to Gosford Hospital.   

The truck driver was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital. His condition is currently unknown.

Traffic was backed up 9km form the crash site all lanes northbound have been closed. 

One lane has reopened northbound around 6pm, but traffic remains at a crawl with queues up to 7km.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area and use the Old Pacific Highway instead.
