Members of the public desperately scrambled to catch the offenders, who were also armed with crow bars and a hammer, moments after the robbery at 5pm today.

Pictures of the aftermath of the incident show smashed glass inside the shop and jewels sprawled across the floor.

A man in his twenties who lives nearby and helped catch one of the men told MailOnline he saw six people pull up on four motorbikes earlier today.

He saw them break into the shop and instantly shouted ‘Police, police, help!’ to attract attention.

The witness claims he managed to trip one of the men up before a group of almost 10 people grabbed his arms and legs to keep him pinned down before the police arrived.

He said: ‘It was frightening, there were people shouting he’s got a knife.

‘Some people grabbed his arms, while the others got his legs and we pulled his helmet off so he could breathe.’

He claims the man was begging his peers not to leave him, before they ran off and police arrived three or four minutes later.

A crowbar used by the gang to break in was left lying on the street outside.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told MailOnline: ‘Police were called to the jewellers in W9 at 17.12hrs on Monday, 20 May to reports off a group of moped riders armed with knives a hammer and a crow bar.

‘One of the suspects, a male, was arrested after he was detained by members of the public at the scene.

‘He has been taken to hospital to be treated for a minor injury. Two other male suspects were arrested by armed police near Camden market place a short time later.

‘Enquiries continue. Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD 5507 or via @Metcc on Twitter. Information can also be passed anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.’
