Thousands of pounds of sausage have been recalled due to possible metal contamination.

RL Zeigler Co Inc, based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, received reports of bits of metal found inside its ‘ready to eat’ chicken and pork links.

According to a notice from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the recall affects more than 11,600 pounds of sausage labeled as ‘red hots’ – some of them also labeled ‘extra hot’.

The packages were shipped to Walmart and other retailers and grocers nationwide, but it is unknown specific states that are affected by the recall.

So far, no one has reported having an adverse reaction after consuming one of these products.

RL Zeigler Co Inc is recalling more than 11,600 pounds of its ‘ready to eat’ chicken and pork sausage after consumers reported finding metal bits inside the products

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says Zeigler received complaints between December 13 and 27.

After investigating, Zeigler notified the agency on Saturday.

Subject to recall are two 24-ounce plastic packages labeled ‘Zeigler A Tradition of Great Taste Red Hots’ and ‘Extra Hot Zeigler A Tradition of Great Taste Red Hots’.

Each package contains about nine links and has a use-by date of January 24, 2019.

The products were produced on November 29, 2018 and have the establishment number EST P-9156S inside the USDA mark of inspection.

It remains unclear on how the metal got into the sausage and the type of metal that was found.

FSIS classified the recall as Class I meaning ‘a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death’.

Customers are urged not to consume the products and either throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

RL Zeigler Co Inc has yet to issue a statement on the recall.

However, FSIS says anyone with questions about the recall can call the company’s controller Jeff Berry during business hours at (334) 410-9845.

This is the latest in a series of recalls of food products due to metal contamination.

On December 10, Jimmy Dean recalled more than 29,000 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat sausage after customers reported finding ‘small, string-like fragments of metal’ in the product, according to the Jimmy Dean website.

In September, Wayne Farms LLC, of Alabama, recalled nearly 439,000 pounds of frozen, fully-cooked chicken after metal bits were found inside.

In May, Hormel Foods Corp recalled more than 228,000 of its 12-ounce SPAM Classic canned meats after four consumer reports of metal objects found in the cans.

That same month, H‑E‑B Ice Cream recalled 20 of its ice creams and sherbets after broken metal was discovered in the processing equipment.
