More than 50,000 music fans are left fuming after Boardmasters festival is axed

Disgruntled festival goers have lashed out at the organisers of Cornish musical festival Boardmasters after it was cancelled with just 12 hours’ notice.

The three-day event which was set to host 50,000 music fans had boasted headline acts such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Florence And The Machine and Foals, was scrapped due to warnings of severe weather conditions.

Revellers took to social media as they slammed Boardmasters for allowing many of them to travel part of the way before pulling the plug on the event after the Met Office warned of wild weather, including heavy rain and high winds.

One fan said she had ‘driven six hours and 270 miles to find it had been cancelled’ while another he had spent 13 hours on a coach.

Posting on Twitter he said: ‘The fact 5 of us left at 8 o’clock this morning, and spent 13 hours on various coaches costing over 250 between us to find out 2 hours after we arrive that it’s cancelled.’

Some had even taken the night bus to the festival and on arrival, were told it had been cancelled.

This is while Hannah O’Brien and Charlotte-Louise Summers arrived at Newquay from their homes in Bromley, Kent, today having spent more than £500 each on tickets, camping gear and food for the weekend.

‘It’s frustrating but we are trying to make light of it,’ said Charlotte-Louise.

Hannah added: ‘Some of it we can get refunded but a lot of it is on hotels, food and clothes – stuff like that that we are not going to get any use from.’

Another reveller Kristina Powell said she had not been able to sleep after she learnt the event had been cancelled.

‘I came from Cheshire to my mum in Devon on Sunday (to go on to Newquay early this morning). My cousins came from London to meet me yesterday.

‘Two more of our friends travelled to Newquay yesterday and stayed in a B&B last night. One more was on an overnight coach and arrived in Newquay at 6am.

‘At first we couldn’t and didn’t want to believe it and honestly thought it was a hoax. It all seemed a bit unprofessional – a screenshot of a statement written on a ‘notes’ app?

In a statement, the festival said the decision to cancel was made after speaking with police and independent safety advisers.

The statement said: ‘The safety of you, the fans and attendees, as well as performers and crew comes first, and the potential risk is too severe for the event to go ahead at this time.’

Refund information will be shared ‘as soon as possible’, organisers said.

They added: ‘We sincerely regret the disappointment to fans, and apologise for any disruption caused to local businesses, performers and crew who were looking forward to Boardmasters as much as we were.’
