Morning show hosts break out fascinators in days before royal wedding

  • American morning show hosts have been showcasing an array of fascintaors in the days leading up to the royal wedding
  • The hosts covering the wedding for Today, Good Morning America and CBS This Morning in London all donned the headpieces this week
  • It is a trend that only took off in America back in 2011 , during the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton

The American fascination with fascinators continues, just seven years after the dizzying array of headwear on display at the royal wedding of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge inspired thousands of copycats.

That became clear earlier this week, when mornings show hosts both on assignment in London and back in their New York studios started topping off their looks with the added bit of flair.

Among those who came down with hat-scratch fever this week were the women of Today, Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, both hosts on Live With Kelly and Ryan and Gayle King, who is over in London to report in the wedding for CBS This Morning.

Not everyone has been thrilled with the addition to their on-air wardrobe, with Kathie Lee Gifford the most vocal detractor of the accessory.

As is almost always the case with Gifford, she made a point of declaring her disdain for fascinatora live on-air Friday.

This came during a segment when she and Kotb previewed some high-end pieces, and long after Gifford had abandoned her own headpiece.

Kelly Ripa on the other hand opted to wear a fascinator from her own wardrobe on Friday, selecting a diving green headpiece that was the work of legendary milliner Phillipe Treacy.

Those couture creations can cost up to $10,000, and will be found atop the domes of many in attendance on Saturday.
