Morrisons slashes 10p off a litre ahead of Black Friday

  • Morrisons offers customers 10p off a litre but only if they spend £50 in store
  • Those who qualify will receive a money-off voucher to be used at the pumps
  • Comes amid speculation Philip Hammond could this week increase fuel duty

Morrisons is to slash the price of petrol by up to 10p per litre ahead of Black Friday, it was revealed today.

Drivers could save around £5 on a tank of fuel as the supermarket tries to undercut its rivals.

But customers will have to get in there fast because the offer is only on for six days – and they’ll have to spend £50 in Morrisons first to get it.

Those who qualify will then be presented with a money-off voucher to use in petrol stations until Sunday, December 3.

Chancellor Philip Hammond will present his budget on Wednesday and there are rumours he could increase prices in line with inflation.

With the average price of unleaded now 120.8 and 123.2 for diesel, economists have warned the rising price of oil could also push up prices by up 8p-a-litre.

Simon Williams, the RAC’s fuel spokesman, said: ‘Motorists are going to be hit by rising pump prices in the next few weeks.’

If the average car uses about 35 litres of fuel a week, forecasts would add £150 a year extra to motoring bills.

This follows a meteoric rise in the cost of oil which has soared 30 per cent since June.

And there is speculation about a possible rise in fuel duty following a seven-year freeze.

Steve Mosey, Morrisons Services Director, said: ‘Motorists could face a triple-whammy of rising petrol prices, extra fuel tax and a busy Christmas shopping season so we’re doing what we can to help them afford to run their cars.’
