Morrissey is blasted for defending right-wing thug Tommy Robinson

The outspoken singer sparked outrage online by describing the jailing of English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson as ‘shocking’.

The former Smiths frontman from Manchester was discussing what he feels is a lack of diversity in opinion in mainstream politics during an interview.

He said right-winger’s jailing for breaking contempt laws by filming outside a court was an example of how Britain’s biggest political parties are against freedom of expression.

‘It’s very obvious that Labour or the Tories do not believe in free speech,’ he told tremr. ‘I mean, look at the shocking treatment of Tommy Robinson.’

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, was held after he live-streamed himself speaking on the steps of Leeds Crown Court.

The hour-long film, which has been watched more than 250,000 times, shows the extraordinary moment that the 35-year-old was arrested by police.

The English Defence League founder was then taken before a judge who jailed him for 13 months after he pleaded guilty to contempt of court and breaching the terms of a suspended sentence for a similar offence

Today social media users came out in force against Morrissey’s remarks on the Robinson case, with one branding him a ‘b******’ and another suggesting the singer was one step away from committing a terrorist atrocity.

Another accused the performer of making racist remarks. It came after Morrissey has launched a tirade against halal – the Islamic method of animal slaughter – describing it as ‘evil’ and claiming it needs approval from ‘supporters of ISIS’.

The former Smiths frontman told fan website Morrissey Central: 'Halal slaughter requires certification that can only be given by supporters of ISIS, and yet in England we have halal meat served in hospitals and schools!'

In an interview on a fan website earlier this week, Morrissey also attacked London Mayor Sadiq Khan, saying he couldn’t ‘talk properly’ and that London was ‘debased’.

The 58-year-old animal welfare activist – who has been labelled ‘worse than Trump’, an ‘over-rated racist’ and a ‘fool’ by social media users – added that animal rights must come before religion.

The singer told Morrissey Central: ‘If you have any concern for animal welfare, for example, you cannot possibly vote for either Conservatives or Labour, because both parties support halal slaughter, which, as we all know, is evil.

‘Furthermore, halal slaughter requires certification that can only be given by supporters of ISIS, and yet in England we have halal meat served in hospitals and schools!’

The singer added: ‘I am not saying that stunned slaughter is acceptable, because it couldn’t ever be.

‘If you use the term “humane slaughter” then you might as well talk in terms of “humane rape”. People sound very stupid when they mention “humane slaughter”.’

In conventional slaughterhouses, animals are given an electric shock to ensure they are unconscious before their throats are cut, minimising suffering.

However many in the Muslim faith claim that stunning is also inhumane and that when an animal is slaughtered properly, it immediately becomes unconscious and dies within seconds.

And on the subject of Sadiq Khan, the singer said on the fan website: ‘I saw an interview where he [the mayor] was discussing mental health, and he repeatedly said “men’el”… he could not say the words “mental health”.’

MailOnline has contacted the Mayor of London’s office and the Halal Food Authority for comment.

Discussing the recent rise in the number of people killed on the streets of London, Morrissey described it as ‘debased’ – adding that the capital was second only to Bangladesh for acid attacks.

Stating that we live in an ‘Age of Atrocity’, he went on to claim that because all the attacks were ‘non-white’, they were not being ‘truthfully addressed’ by the Government, the Metropolitan Police or the BBC due to political correctness.

He also had a rant against Diane Abbott during the talk.

Asked by the interviewer whether he voted to leave the EU, Morrissey replied: ‘No. I don’t have sufficient faith in the circus of politics… It is a moral disaster on every level. Even Tesco wouldn’t employ Diane Abbott.’

Morrissey has never been shy about his views on meat eaters, once declaring: ‘If I’m introduced to anyone who eats beings, I walk away.’

In February, Morrissey wrote to Irish agriculture minister Michael Creed calling for a ban on fur farming.

The singer thanked Mr Creed for banning wild animal circuses last year and urged him to ‘continue on this progressive path by also outlawing fur farming’ in Ireland.

The letter, on behalf of animal welfare group Peta, said: ‘Ireland has three fur farms, on which 200,000 minks are jammed into squalid cages and denied the opportunity to roam, swim, or care for their young.

‘This confinement causes them such psychological distress that many go insane and mutilate themselves.’

He continued: ‘They’re killed when they’re only about six months old, crammed by the dozens into a box and gassed to death. And for what?

‘A stale “status symbol” that nobody wants to wear any more.’

‘Tesco wouldn’t employ Diane Abbott’: The musings of Morrissey

Morrissey: 'Brexit did not happen. The EU wouldn't allow it to happen'

Morrissey: ‘Brexit did not happen. The EU wouldn’t allow it to happen’

In conversation with John Riggers on the Morrissey Central website on Monday, the singer gave his views on such diverse topics as halal, Brexit and the Mayor of London. Here are some of Morrissey’s soundbites from the discussion…

  • London is debased. I saw an interview where [Sadiq Khan] was discussing mental health, and he repeatedly said “men’el” … he could not say the words ‘mental health’.
  • All of the [recent acid] attacks are non-white, and so they cannot be truthfully addressed by the British government or the Met Police or the BBC because of political correctness. We live in the Age of Atrocity.
  • Brexit did not happen. The EU wouldn’t allow it to happen. It is now a dead issue.
  • Even Tesco wouldn’t employ Diane Abbott.
  • If you have any concern for animal welfare… you cannot possibly vote for either Conservatives or Labour, because both parties support halal slaughter, which, as we all know, is evil.
  • Halal slaughter requires certification that can only be given by supporters of ISIS, and yet in England we have halal meat served in hospitals and schools! UK law is pointless!
  • Animal rights must come before religion.
  • There is a new party called For Britain. They have the best approach to animal welfare.
