Moscow mother is held for ‘beating her daughter to death’

Irina Moskvitina, 37, died of ‘multiple’ wounds in a Moscow hospital after doctors failed to save her life

A mother in Moscow has been detained after allegedly ‘handcuffing’ and ‘chaining’ her 37- year-old daughter before beating her to death.

Irina Moskvitina died of ‘multiple’ wounds in hospital after doctors failed to save her life.

Her mother has been detained, according to reports in Moscow citing law enforcement sources.

Police found handcuffs, a chain, sticks and traces of blood in the flat Moskvitana shared with her mother.

The mother Olga Mostvitina, 66, is suspected of ‘chaining her daughter to prevent her leaving the flat – and later beating Irina to death’, according to one report.

No charges have been made.

One theory is that Irina was a drug addict and the family could not afford rehabilitation – and this is why she was chained.

Irina was married but had moved back to her mother’s home in Moscow region after quarrelling with her husband, said one account.

Neighbours said the mother was harsh in her treatment of her daughter, accusing her of ‘indecent behaviour’ and living a ‘dissolute’ life.

They often heard ‘screaming and shouting’ coming from the flat.

A friend of the dead woman Anastasia N said: ‘Irina told me that she argued with her husband and went to live with her mother.’

She said: ‘Her mother hated her.

‘She never wanted to have Irina, she didn’t want to give birth.’

Irina ‘never managed to deal with her because she did not know how to fight back.

‘Her mother was always yelling at Irina, shouting at her for some alleged dissolute life style.

‘But Irina hardly ever went out.

‘Just last week I asked her to stay overnight at my place.

‘She said: ‘No! My mother would kill me.’

Olga Vradiy, an official with the Russian Investigative Committee, which probes serious crime, said: ‘The woman’s body had marks around her wrists and bloodied bruises around her head.

‘We are figuring out where the wounds came from.’

One neighbour said: ‘The mother claimed her daughter was a drug addict.

‘There was no money for medical treatment, so they both agreed to use handcuffs on her when she had withdrawal symptoms.’

Forensic tests are being conducted on her body.
