Mosman’s elite fall for hilarious April Fool’s Day prank

Residents in one of Australia’s most exclusive suburbs fall for hilarious April Fool’s prank about charging outsiders for using ‘their’ beach

  • The prank stated the Balmoral Beach would have a gate installed and charge $5
  • Many people became outraged by the fictional plan and voiced their frustration
  • Others said it was a really good idea and called on the Sydney council to build it

Residents in one of Sydney’s most affluent suburbs have fallen for an April Fool’s Day prank claiming that outsiders will have to pay to use their beach.

The prank was posted to Facebook and said the gate would charge beachgoers from outside Mosman $5 an hour just to get onto the sand of Balmoral beach.

Dozens of social media users appeared to fall for the prank, and others still came out in support of the fictional plan.

The original post (pictured) said: ‘The new so-called “Beach Access Gates” is supposed to make the beach better for all. But at $5.00 per hour just to get onto the said, I’m not convinced. Views?’

Some of the users forgot it was April Fool’s and became outraged at the idea of installing a beach access gate.

One user said: ‘You’re kidding?! That bloody Mosman Council is just full of no good revenue makers!’

‘This is nothing short of outrageous. Mosman council may maintain the beach but they do not own it to raise revenue – rates should cover that,’ another user said.

Others missed the joke but also supported the idea of the Mosman Council charging people to go to the beach.

One user said: ‘A great idea. I think boom gates at the top of Awaba (street) would be useful as well.’

‘All for it as long as free beach towels are on offer and they have somebody brush the sand off your feet as you leave,’ said another user.

One user tagged a friend and wrote; ‘This would be good!’

‘Great idea – swimmers surcharge also I hope,’ one user said.

Another users said: ‘I’m sure if you live in Mosman, you can afford it!’

One person joked: ‘Should keep the troglodytes and undesirables out. Perhaps a fine on exposed tattoos and a valet parking service would compliment this.’
