  • Father Naeem Rashid wrestled with the shooter in an attempt to disarm him
  • He died in hospital just hours later from wounds relating to the shooting
  • Tragically Naeem’s  21-year-old son Talha was also killed in the brutal massacre

The hero who tried to wrestle the gun from the Christchurch mosque shooter’s hands before he was killed has been immortalised in a mural.

Naeem Rashid died in hospital from wounds related to the shooting at Al Noor mosque on Friday.

The father tried to save other worshippers by launching himself at alleged gunman,  28-year-old Australian man Brenton Tarrant, in an attempt to disarm him.

Kiwi artist Paul Walsh has since commemorated Mr Rashid in an enormous mural on display in Auckland, on New Zealand’s north island.

He said the green and black background of the artwork is representative of Mr Rashid’s background.

‘It represents both Pakistan and New Zealand, united in mourning,’ he wrote alongside a picture of the mural he shared to his Facebook page.

‘I wish I didn’t know who Naeem was,’ he wrote. ‘I wish he was back at his job as a teacher today, and I wish I was painting something else.

‘But some coward changed everything, and I have had to respond in the only way I know how; by honouring the lives of my fellow New Zealanders who didn’t make it home on Friday.

‘We will not forget you.’

Mr Rashid’s 21-year-old son Talha also died during the mass shooting.

At least 50 people were killed after Tarrant allegedly attacked two mosques in the deadliest mass shooting in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed more charges are expected to be laid.
