A mother was  accidentally shot by her three-year-old son after he picked up a gun that had been left underneath his father’s seat in the car.

The incident took place outside a McDonald’s in a shopping center parking lot at 2510 West Broward Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, at around 1.45pm on Thursday.

Police officials say the mother is now in a stable condition after she was rushed to General Medical Center as a trauma alert.

The boy is believed to have accidentally discharged the gun, which hit his mother.

His father had stepped out of the car for three minutes to visit a local business.

Another child, a one-year-old girl, was also present in the car with their mother.

A local shop owner told ABC: ‘A person came into the store and got a water and then came back out.

‘Within a minute or two later I looked out the window and there was a woman laying alongside the SUV. A woman who was out there assumes it was a gunshot.
