When her son was born on Halloween last year, Liz always knew she wanted to theme his first birthday around the spooky holiday.
And so when the time came for issuing invitations this week, the 30-year-old decided to conduct a Halloween-themed photo shoot, complete with a ‘brain matter’ cake smash for her son.
Speaking to FEMAIL, the Melbourne-based mum revealed exactly how she put her gory creation together, as well as how much it cost her.

According to Liz, she came up with the idea for the cake smash after browsing Pinterest and seeing similar ideas out there:
‘Alexander was born on Halloween so we always knew we wanted to do a Halloween-themed cake smash for his first birthday,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.
‘At first, we thought we’d dress him up like a little Dracula, but then when I was browsing Pinterest I saw a brain cake on the platform and thought that might be fun to try.’

To make the cake (pictured with Alexander), Liz bought two sponge cakes from Woolworths, alongside cream cheese which she used for the ‘brain matter’ and some fresh raspberries to make the blood on top
Visiting her local Woolworths store, the mother purchased two sponge cakes, cream cheese – which she used for the ‘brain matter’ – and some fresh raspberries to make the ‘blood on top’.
The whole creation cost her ‘roughly $40’.
‘The recipe used fondant and jam for the blood, but I wanted to use something a little less sugary,’ Liz explained.
‘When I got home, I rolled the cream cheese into sausages and bent them into shape, then poured blended raspberries on top. I had to work quite quickly so that the cream cheese didn’t melt.’

Her son enjoyed the cake, while the parents took photographs to send to friends and family for his birthday
Liz completed her creation by putting together a video with her partner, inviting friends and family to Alexander’s first birthday.
‘It’s always been a bit of a running joke in the family, that Alexander always has a dirty look on his face when getting his picture taken, so we wanted to make a funny horror movie trailer about finding out that he’s really a little monster,’ she said.
‘So we made a slideshow of images and interspersed it with the invitation. It was quite fun to do.’

Later that evening, the mother-of-one shared her cake smash on a Facebook group, where she quickly received more than 2,000 likes and comments – many said it was ‘awesome’

‘My little guy is turning one on Halloween, so we decided to do a zombie-themed cake smash for his invitations,’ Liz explained.
‘The cake is made from two sponges with cream cheese “brain matter” and melted raspberry jam “blood” on top. Horrifying but tasty!’.
Comments ranged from ‘absolutely brilliant’ to ‘you win the Internet today’.
‘What an incredible sense of humour and fun,’ another commenter added.
Liz said she didn’t expect the huge reaction and is flattered.
‘The only thing I’m worried about now is that we set the bar too high for the party!,’ she added.

This isn’t the first time an Australian mother has themed a cake smash around zombies and gore; Amy Louise also did the same for her son, Phoenix (pictured)

This isn’t the first time an Australian mother has themed a cake smash around zombies and gore.
Amy Louise, from Brisbane, was slammed after her son was pictured in a series of gruesome photographs feasting on a bloody ‘brains’ cake.
What the trolls didn’t know about was the heartbreaking tale behind the pictures.
After giving birth in October 2015, Amy’s newborn was immediately whisked away by doctors after Phoenix didn’t have a heartbeat.
The young mother and her fiance were left reeling after they were convinced their baby son had died because he wasn’t breathing – as doctors tried desperately to resuscitate him.
Baby Phoenix proved to be a little fighter when he was ‘brought back’ to life on Halloween on October 31.

‘What better than a zombie-themed cake smash for the tiny baby boy who was pronounced dead and then miraculously came to life on Halloween,’ Phoenix’s mother said
Four days later, Amy was allowed to hold her ‘miracle zombie baby’ for the first time.
‘When I held him for the first time, the world disappeared,’ Amy recalled.
Celebrating his first birthday, the mother said she thought the zombie-themed cake smash for Phoenix was well suited following the ordeal.
‘What better than a zombie-themed cake smash for the tiny baby boy who was pronounced dead and then miraculously came to life on Halloween,’ she said at the time.
