Mother divides the internet by gifting her children COAL for Christmas – but not all parents are against the idea

  • A Queensland mother has gifted her children coal for Christmas to prove a point
  • She wrote them a letter, signed from Santa Claus, about their misbehaviour
  • While she did get them a select few presents they also received the coal
  • Other parents were torn about whether it was in the spirit of Christmas

An Australian mother has divided the internet after she gifted her children a box of coal for Christmas after they ‘misbehaved’ during the year.

The woman, who is from Queensland, decided to share her ‘lesson learning’ present on Facebook, sparking fury and finality among other parents.

In a letter she wrote to her children under the alias of Santa Claus, the mother said that she had been watching them closely and had been ‘unsure’ whether to put them on the naughty or nice list.

‘I must tell you that I was only just able to place you all on the nice list,’ she wrote.

Would you give your children coal for Christmas?

‘I have given most of what you all asked for but unfortunately I have seen some awful behaviour and been told that you fight too much and have no respect for mummy.

‘As a result I have decided this year that the fort you asked for I could not give. Take this as a lesson… I’m always watching.’

One woman was extremely upset that her children were subjected to such ‘trauma’ and that this move was taking the ‘magic’ out of Christmas.

‘365 days of the year you had a s****ty kid? I don’t think so the lesson here is even if I am good most of the time I am going to get punished,’ she said.

‘Your children aren’t with you for long… they grow up too quick and before you know it they will have their drivers license and what memory did you give them?’

‘If you love your kids treat them with respect.’

But a host of other mothers and fathers saw it as a wonderful idea, one that would ensure they acted appropriately the following year.

‘Good on you. I have actually removed presents this year as my pre-teen has been an absolute nightmare and I will not stand for her behaviour,’ one woman said.

‘I’ve seriously considered putting her Christmas presents I’ve removed on display and she can earn them during the year.’

‘I wrap up potatoes… say that every potato was a gift but they were naughty and magic Santa turned it into a potato… there’s always the same amount of toys as always but I wrap up extra potatoes for the poorly behaved,’ another said.

While she did give her children a small token of thanks for their marginally good behaviour, the coal was their major present.
