Mother fighting for her life after Birmingham hit-and-run

A new mother is fighting for her life in hospital after being struck down by a car as she walked her four-day-old baby in a pram.

The 28-year-old woman was mown down as she crossed the A34 Walsall Road in Great Barr, Birmingham around 6pm on Saturday.

A manhunt is now underway for the driver of the Mazda MPS Aero Sports who ploughed into the woman and left her in a critical condition, before fleeing the scene on foot.

The victim remains in a critical condition while her baby has been kept in hospital as a precaution

The baby was checked over by medics and kept in hospital as a precaution.

The driver of the car remains at large, having fled the scene on foot, police said. 

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes said: ‘This investigation is in its early stages and we are trying to establish exactly what happened.

‘I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t yet spoken to police to make contact.
