‘It’s an evil act’: Mother horrified as her six-month-old son is left bleeding after being pricked by a compass lodged in baby seat of a Big W trolley

  • Mikayla Harris found a compass wedged into a trolley at a Big W store in Perth
  • The mum-of-one put her son Kai into the baby’s seat of the trolley on Thursday
  • The six-month-old became restless and Ms Harris noticed her son’s bloodied leg

A mother has been left horrified after her six-month-old son was left with a bloodied leg after being pricked by a compass lodged in a Big W trolley.

Mikayla Harris was shopping at Livingston Marketplace, in Perth, when she put Kai into the baby’s seat on Thursday.

The mum-of-one said she always checks the seats before putting her son down but must have missed the device wedged in the trolley, Perth Now reported.

Ms Harris said she realised something was wrong when Kai became restless and unsettled as they walked through the store.

‘When I first saw it I freaked out and felt a bit guilty, like I should have seen it,’ she said.

Kai’s leg was bleeding and the concerned mum took him to the doctors for further testing.

‘He had a blood test and will need to have one again in three months and 12 months, we don’t know if the needle… if anyone else had stabbed themselves with it, blood cross-contamination,’ she said.

‘I just don’t understand how anyone could put it on a baby’s seat knowing that a baby’s going to sit there, it’s just an act of evil.’

Ms Harris wrote about the ordeal on Facebook to warn other mums.

‘Hey mums just a word of warning I was at Big W Livingston,’ she wrote.

‘As we were in the checkout I take bubs out his seat and see a tiny compass needle hidden underneath the seat with just the needle exposed.

‘Please make sure you extra check as it was barely visible.’

A Big W spokesperson told Perth Now the trolleys are regularly checked by staff and the safety of families that shop in store is a top priority.
