Mom charged: Elizabeth Malone, 28, has been charged with child abuse and neglect for allegedly giving her five-year-old son an unknown substance that made him bleed and nearly killed him
The warrant, first cited by NBC4, Malone brought her son to the hospital on April 19, saying he was bleeding from his mouth and tracheostomy tube.
Hospital staff said the boy had been admitted to the medical facility seven times since February, including twice for unexplained bleeding from his mouth, nose and tracheostomy tube.
Doctors performed tests on the child that all came back normal, which raised concerns that it was Malone who was hurting her son.
During the child’s weeklong hospital stay, staff contacted Child Protective Services and then the Fairfax County Police Department.
A hidden camera installed inside the boy’s room at Inova Fairfax Hospital allegedly caught Malone in the act
Unbeknownst to Malone, a camera was installed inside her son’s room. According to the warrant, on April 25 the device captured the mother taking a syringe from a medical cart, emptying its contents and filling it with an unknown fluid from her purse.
The 28-year-old was then observed administering the substance to her son through his mouth and nose, which caused a medical emergency, according to the document.
Doctors later told investigators that the five-year-old boy could have died without medical care.
