A mother has been urged to abandon her rental apartment after discovering mushrooms had sprouted from a door frame.

The woman, who had been living in the property with her family for a few months, said the fungi had infested the premises after a shower had sprung a leak.

The mother-of-one from Sydney took to social media to share an image of the discovery and to ask for advice on how to treat the ‘gross’ growth.

In the image, shared to the Mums Who Clean Facebook page, at least six mushrooms can be seen growing out the bottom of a door frame.

The woman said she had ‘freaked out’ when she had first found the fungi.

‘Grossed out! We live in a rental and only been here for a few [months],’ she wrote.

‘Water must have been leaking from the shower through the back of the wall for some time.

‘Found these tasty mushrooms sprouted out of our door frame.

‘We contacted our property manager and they got a plumber to regrout the tiles,’ she explained.

Despite a plumber attending to the area, the mushrooms regrew just a few days later.

‘I don’t think it’s fixed the problem as this morning we found the lovely mushrooms are back,’ she said.

The mum took to social media to ask for advice on how to treat the mushrooms growing in her bathroom

The mum took to social media to ask for advice on how to treat the mushrooms growing in her bathroom

‘Worried as we have a [3-year-old] running around too,’ she added.

She said she had also tried to get rid of the mushrooms herself by rubbing vinegar on the door frame.

But in case the mushrooms returned again she asked members of the group for advice.

Alarmed social media users implored her to evacuate the apartment and said the situation was ‘extremely dangerous’ and ‘toxic’.

‘Move, get out of lease. That will go into your furniture, clothes and body,’ one wrote.

Another warned the mushrooms could make the family ‘so sick’.

‘This happened in our house, and we had to completely reframe the sections of the wall that had rotted out,’ another said.

One user said the landlord had ‘breached their duty of care’, while another said it seemed like the plumber had done a ‘patch up’ job.

While others advised the woman to contact the Residential Tenancies Authority about the issue.

Mould can grow in damp, dark and poorly ventilated areas of the home such as bathrooms or basement areas, according to New South Wales Family and Community services.

The service says the most effective way to prevent mould is to let fresh air and light into the home.

It also states cleaning regularly and controlling the amount of moisture in a home will help to stop the issue.
