Mother Jaime Shields said son Carter would wake up covered in BLOOD due to his severe eczema

A mother has praised a $10 cream for clearing up her toddler son’s irritating eczema that was so severe his clothes would get stuck to his body after he scratched himself in his sleep until he bled.

Jaime Shields, from Victoria’s Echuca, said she noticed red scabs started to appear on her little boy Carter’s chin, tummy, back and bottom shortly after turning one.

The two-year-old boy tried nearly every lotion, prescribed medication and even daily bleach baths in a desperate attempt to treat his painful skin condition that was afflicting him over 18 months – but nothing seemed to work.

The mother-of-two said she was even ‘scared’ to take her son outside amid fears of what people would say or think about his bloodied, inflamed rashes.

But after reading a Daily Mail Australia story about a young girl who also suffered eczema, the 25-year-old mother decided to give Childs Farm Baby Moisturiser a go – and much to her amazement, little Carter’s itchy skin cleared up within a week.

‘He had dry skin since birth but then roughly around the age of one, he started to break out with scabs, like round circles around his face and body,’ Ms Shields told Daily Mail Australia.

‘The scabs became more inflamed when he started scratching them.

‘We tried nearly everything possible, different moisturisers, creams, ointments, we even met with dermatologists and took him to a salt therapy session, tried bleach baths and wet wraps – nothing worked.’

His skin condition was so severe, little Carter would wake up covered in blood.

‘He would scratch in his sleep, and he’d wake up with his clothes stuck to his body from all the bleeding,’ Ms Shields said.

‘We tried everything to prevent him from scratching but he would pull it all off.’

Ms Shields said she was even worried about being judged over her son’s condition.

‘I had my great Auntie’s 80th that I was scared to go to because of what people would say – but they were all so good to us telling us different things to try,’ she said.

‘However being in a different town, when we went down the street a little girl turned to her mother and said “whats wrong with that boy?”. Luckily, the mother could tell what it was and responded by saying “the little boy has eczema”. I was glad she knew what it was.’

Far from getting better, the mother said the family felt helpless after they struggled to find a solution to help Carter alleviate his pain.

‘We just didn’t know what to do anymore,’ she said.

‘We saw multiple doctors, and everyone would say the same thing. We tried everything they suggested, used different steroids, they put us on antibiotics, and we even went to two skin specialists.

‘It was absolutely heartbreaking seeing him in pain. He would cry at times, he wasn’t himself. He was always a happy little boy but then he became miserable, constantly rubbing his chin on things to scratch himself.’

Taking a bath was always a challenge for Carter.

‘He wouldn’t have a normal bath, the water would always be lukewarm,’ she said.

‘It couldn’t be too hot because his rashes flared up or he couldn’t have bubbles because it’ll set him off. The water was bearable but not warm enough to enjoy really. He did get used to the water, which was good.’

Desperate for anything to help alleviate her son’s painful rashes, the mother turned to Childs Farms after reading about the glowing reviews earlier this year.

And almost instantly, she could see her son’s rashes disappear.

‘I started using the moisturiser and within a week, I noticed the change. He was much more happier, he was completely cleared,’ she said.

‘But recently, the weather has changed again so his skin has started to break out a little bit, but it’s nothing like it used to be. I believe it’s all under control now.

‘It’s the best we’ve had it. And he can now have a bubble bath with his little brother, they love having baths together.’

For any parent whose child is going through eczema as well, Ms Shields said: ‘As hard as it is to watch your child go through this, just find something that works.

‘We’ve been so lucky after it took us a year and a half to find something to suit his skin, it’s taken us this long but you need to keep looking until something works for your child,’ she said.
