A mother, 32, who locked her three young children in a bedroom with some toilet paper and a bucket while she headed for a late-night romp has been given 18 months in jail.

The selfish parent walked out on her eldest son’s seventh birthday to meet her new boyfriend for sex at the Holiday Inn Express in Burnley, Lancashire.

When police officers forced their way in to the family’s Blackburn property, in Lancashire, they were horrified to see the children locked in a bedroom with a bucket, roll of toilet paper and a plastic bag filled with snacks.

The mother’s five-year-old told them: ‘Mummy had left us alone again.’

The door handles had been removed and their only source of light was a lamp with exposed wires plugged into a damaged socket, causing a ‘clear fire hazard’, Preston Crown Court heard.

Police later found text messages where the mother made it clear that she had booked a room at the Holiday Inn Express, with a man she referred to as ‘babe’.

The mother claimed to have asked her sister to look after her children and dumped them at home when the plans fell through.

On returning home to Blackburn, Lancashire, she was arrested around 8am the next day.

The children’s father, who is separated from their mother, had grown concerned when she had left them alone on September 15, 2017.

When police arrived at the scene, they could see a light on in the back bedroom and broke through the front door.

The mother had left her son's birthday as she went for a night-time romp with her new lover on September 15, 2017. She was asked to complete 150 community service and 30 rehabilitation activity days, it was heard at Preston Crown Court (pictured, file image)

Charles Brown, prosecuting, said the youngster’s could be heard crying inside and the father asked them to stand clear of the door before the police forced it open. They then spent the night with their father.

Meanwhile Kelly Cyples, defending, said her client had been involved in an abusive relationship with the children’s father, which she had ended.

But because she had married him against her family’s wishes, she was effectively isolated and had struggled with bringing the children up, she claimed.
