Mother of German backpacker killed by lawnmower searching for answers

The mother of a German backpacker who died after being pinned underneath a ride-on lawnmower on an avocado farm is still searching far answers.

Jennifer Kohl, 27, was riding the lawnmower with another man along the side of a hill on December 8 when it rolled over on top of her.

Emergency services were unable to save Ms Kohl, who died at scene near Tamborine Mountain, about 40 kilometres from the Gold Coast.

The devastated mother said she felt empty and without peace and was contacting media, emergency services, and anyone who shared Ms Kohl’s final hours.

‘I want to know exactly what happened that day… I’m sick with sorrow and worry … always crying for her,’ she told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘I do not want to blame anyone, I just want to know how Jennifer and her friends were doing at the farm.

‘I would like to speak with them… I hope they understand that they were the last ones who saw my daughter alive.’

The last time they spoke was four days earlier on the young woman’s 27th birthday, telling her she loved her and missed her.

Ms Kohl was just two months from the end of her visa and a return home to her family.

Mourners at Ms Kohl’s funeral remembered her as an independent woman who took her own path early in life.

They said she always had a ‘green thumb’ so working on a farm was a natural way for her to make money and extend her Australian visa.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland are investigating Ms Kohl’s death, and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Mathias, a friend of Ms Kohl’s, paid tribute to his best friend of over a decade, who stuck by him through thick and thin.

‘She was the one who gave me the power and motivation not to give up over and over again in just a unique way that I never seen before,’ he said soon after her death.

‘I will remember her as a strong woman, as someone who has enriched my life and I’m happy and proud to have met her.’

He said Ms Kohl, a native of Leipzig, had inspired him to draw and paint, and said he shared her passion for animals.
