A mother-of-one died after waking with a crippling migraine that ‘stopped her heart beating’, according to her family.
Laura Burns, 32, who had suffered from splitting headaches all her life, lost consciousness shortly after waking on Sunday morning before going into cardiac arrest.
Mrs Burns could not be resuscitated at her home in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, so was taken to Antrim Area Hospital, where she worked as a nurse, and placed on life support.
Her brother, Andrew Brooker, told Belfast Live: ‘In the early hours of Sunday, Laura was at home in bed with Lorcan when she suffered a migraine, something she had lived with since her teenage years but this time sadly it caused her to pass out and her heart to stop beating.
‘Despite the best efforts of her Dad and four paramedics Laura couldn’t be revived and suffered catastrophic brain damage.’
This was switched off on Monday.
Mrs Burns also leaves behind her son, Lorcan, and husband, Keelan.
The family have launched a fundraising appeal for the Antrim intensive care unit and the Buddy Bear Trust, which helps people with cerebral palsy. Lorcan was diagnosed with the condition shortly after birth.
Mr Brooker added: ‘Through our heartbreak, we are asking friends and family to donate here in her memory to help support the Buddy Bear Trust that has helped and supported Laura, Keelan and Lorcan so much.’
Mrs Burns’ funeral service will be held on December 14. You can donate to the fundraising appeal here.
