Mother says doctors gave her a syringe so she could ‘let her son slip away’ as a baby

The mother of a boy who has battled for the right to give him cannabis oil claims a doctor gave her a syringe filled with morphine to ‘let him slip away’.

Charlotte Caldwell had repeated opportunities to euthanise her 12-year-old son Billy when he was a baby.

She alleges one doctor offered her a syringe driver and told her it ‘would all be over in a moment’.

She said the doctors actions shocked in her staying with Billy at all times during his 16-week stay at the Royal Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Speaking to The Mirror, Mrs Caldwell said: ‘At four months old I was told Billy was doomed, I was informed repeatedly that his life would be short and painful. I was advised I could administer a fatal dose of morphine to let Billy slip away.

‘No one mentioned killing him or euthanising him, just helping him ‘slip away’. But it was me that would do it, I’d have to plunge an overdose of morphine into his little body and watch him die.

Charlotte and Billy, who is 13 next month, made national headlines earlier this month after his cannabis oil which controls his seizures was confiscated.

The move triggered a debate about legalising cannabis oil in the UK

Billy, from Castlederg, Northern Ireland, was born prematurely at 32 weeks. He did well after leaving hospital but seizures started at four months.

A hospital spokesman said: ‘Euthanasia is illegal in the UK and no one in the RBHSC or wider Belfast Trust would encourage or facilitate this.’

The mum, who is battling for a new UK law to legalise medicinal cannabis, still has Billy’s clinical notes from his time in hospital
