Mother transforms $199 Kmart cubby into a beach house

Over the past few months, Australian mothers have been sharing snaps of their amazing Kmart cubby transformations.

And while many were inspired by luxury homes and modern designs, one Perth couple have transformed their $199 cubby into a chic mini beach house.

Britney Fair, 24, and Callan George, 29, wanted to surprise their little girl Ivy, one, with a beautiful beachy cubby that would give her a slice of the coast in their own backyard.

‘The inspiration for the cubby came from Ivy’s love for the beach and getting dirty,’ Ms Fair, the founder of House of George, told Daily Mail Australia.

‘I saw all these amazing cubbies and thought “What could we do to be different but to also suit us?”‘

‘Our small backyard and house already had a tropical theme so it was the perfect addition.’

The entire transformation cost the pair $300, in addition to the cubby, and took a couple of weeks to put together.

‘For the sandpit we used 3 wooden panels similar to railway sleepers, cut to size at Bunnings and screwed together using bolts,’ Ms Fair said.

‘We placed a blue tarp beneath the sand which was also screwed into the sleepers and pallets to stay in place. The sand is just washed play sand from Bunnings. We used eight bags.’

For the deck, they used four wooden pallets that they got for free before placing Ikea floor decking in dark grey (four packs) on top which they secured with screws.

‘We painted the house and door using a spray gun and a brush for the trim, all bought from Bunnings.’

'It was beautiful to see her little face light up on Christmas morning when she first saw the completed cubby,' Ms Fair said

'Although she had all these new things to play with, her favourite thing was opening and shutting the door,' she said

‘We used fake plants in the planter boxes and purchased the picnic table from Ikea which was also painted in ‘Vivid White’ using a spray gun,’ Ms Fair said.

Once it was complete, it was gifted to little Ivy on Christmas Day.
