A young motocross star has tragically died in a freak accident while competing on the racetrack.

Brayden Erbacher, 20, from Ipswich, Queensland, competing in Wonthaggi, Victoria about 11am on Sunday when he fell launching off a jump and was hit by another rider.

He suffered a severe head injury and was treated at the scene but the talented young rider could not be saved. 

The tragedy happened in front of hundreds of horrified spectators and the rest of the day’s ProMX Championship events – involving elite competitors from across the country – were cancelled.

Mr Erbacher’s devastated mum Corrine said ‘Brayden touched the lives of so many and we were so proud to call him our son.

‘He was a larrikin, and was at his happiest on his bike, playing his guitar and just hanging out with his family and his mates.

‘His passing has left a void that can never be filled,’ she told 9News.

Motorcycling Australia cleared the area after cancelling the rest of the races and investigations by the Victorian police and WorkSafe began. 

Fellow rider Max Barrass said he had raced against Mr Erbacher for years and that he ‘was always a genuine person who had a lot to give for the people around him’.

‘He had a bright future ahead for his motocross career. He always came up for a chat to catch up when I saw him around and was a very down-to-earth guy,’ he told the Herald Sun.

Mr Barrass added that Mr Erbacher was ‘very determined’ to do well in the sport.

The young rider’s friends took to social media to remember their mate, with one saying he ‘lit up the room’ with his smile.

‘Today we lost an incredible human. You were an absolute champion,’ friend Adam Middleton said. ‘I love you so much and you will forever be with us.’

Another friend said Mr Erbacher would be ‘Forever with me’. 

‘I’m going to miss you so much mate, won’t ever forget you. I’ll look up to you everyday brother,’ Bailey Middleton said.
