Motorist dies after driving Audi A3 the wrong way up M4

  • The driver of the black Audi was pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday night 
  • They entered the eastbound carriageway near Swindon and hit multiple cars 
  • Another driver has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries from the smash

A motorist has died and another after driving his Audi A3 the wrong way along the M4 and smashing into other cars – leaving another person in hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the black Audi was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the M4 in Wiltshire at around 10.40pm on Sunday night.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, and said the Audi A3 somehow entered the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between Junction 16 for Swindon West and Junction 17 for Chippenham.

The Audi A3 headed west towards Bristol on the eastbound section of the road, and collided with several cars before a head-on collision with an Audi A4.

‘The driver of the Audi A3 died at the scene,’ said PC Jay Clifton, of the Tri-force roads policing unit.

‘The driver of the Audi A4 was conveyed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening,’ he added.

The M4 between junction 17 and 16 in north Wiltshire was closed for seven hours to carry out an investigations.

‘Police are keen to trace any witnesses to the incident,’ added PC Clifton. 

‘Any persons with information are asked to call 101 and ask for the Tri-Force Investigations Unit.’
