Motorists target cyclists online with death threats

Cyclists have been targeted with death threats through Facebook hate pages.

The anti-cyclists propaganda pages have lead to an unprecedented amount of attacks on riders, according to reports.

Australian Cycle Alliance president Edward Hore has received death threats online by motorists.

He said the extremist lobby are inciting hatred and becoming more sinister through Facebook hate pages, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Mr Hore continued the online hostility and hatred is brought on to the roads against cyclists.

A 55-year-old cyclist died at the scene after a Mercedes van allegedly hit her near Canberra on Sunday morning.

A 37-year-old driver has since been charged with negligent driving and dangerous driving occasioning death.

In another incident, a Brisbane couple became innocent victims in targeted ‘man traps’ where hundreds of thumb tacks have been deliberately laid out across popular bike paths.

The cyclists came upon a line of drawing pins that spanned about three metres when they were out riding.

The bike tyres were punctured after the cyclists unknowingly rode over the sharp objects. This incident was reported in March.

In one week, there had been eleven attacks on cyclists nationwide as they are being told to get off the road, ride single file and get registration papers.

‘The number of attacks on cyclists recently has never been this high….and we’ve never seen this level of aggression before,’ Mr Gore said.

He believes the attacks could have been instigated from the four hate pages, all of which are based in Queensland.

Mr Gore continued both car drivers and cyclists can be at fault but attacking riders may lead to serious injuries or death. He also pointed out cyclists have never killed a driver or a passenger.

‘We’re getting attacked for causing congestion – but let’s ignore the truck that was overturned on the motorway, it’s become just blame a cyclist for everything,’ Mr Gore added.
