Mountains of Christmas waste are STILL piled up as local councils struggle to deal with festive backlog

Mountains of Christmas waste and rubbish has continued to pile up in streets across the UK as local councils struggle to deal with the backlog from the festive period.

Heaps of rubbish still littered the streets of Birmingham today and is believed to have been festering in the area since December 11.

Overflowing bin bags, carrier bags and other household waste items were seen outside a row of houses on Markby Road in Winson Green.

Locals said they have reported the mess to Birmingham City Council four times but that they rubbish has yet to be removed.

Fly tipping has become a serious issue in the area and some have even got rid of waste directly below signs that warn of the £20,000 fines you can encounter if you are caught.

A Christmas tree was left below a ‘No Dumping’ sign and the council tweeted:  ‘Did you know, until 10th January, we are offering a free #Christmas tree recycling service to residents.’ 

A resident, who did not want to be named told of how a huge pile of rubbish, including a fly-tipped ice cream fridge is piled outside her home. T

The mother-of-two said: ‘I have contacted the council four times since December 11th asking for it to be removed but nothing has happened.

‘I have to look out onto it and it’s not fair, my children have to walk past it and it smells of rotten waste, I keep on calling the council but nothing has been done, I will call them again for a 5th time and see what happens.’ 

Piled up waste has been dumped on other streets and left for so long cats and foxes have ripped the bags apart, making them prime spots for rats to feed from.

Rubbish was also seen in different parts of Birmingham such as Musgrave Road and Dudley Road.

The issues in Winson Green come as hundreds of families in the Balsall Heath area were also left swamped by the rubbish.

In Birmingham, residents are still battling with post-Christmas rubbish after the scheduled date on Monday, December 30 was missed. 

On New Year’s Day one man who lives in Balsall Heath claimed he had already seen rats chewing waste from split bin bags.

He said: ‘It’s an absolute disgrace that once again people in Birmingham are not having their rubbish collected’.
