MP warns of starvation if South African farmers come to Australia

A Turnbull Government MP has broken ranks with Immigration Minister Peter Dutton and warned South Africans will starve if white farmers are allowed into Australia as refugees.

Nationals backbacker Andrew Broad, a former Victorian Farmers Federation president, said there would be a ‘humanitarian crisis’ of food shortages without European agricultural expertise.

‘If we take away the farmers from South Africa, we rob them of the capacity to farm that ground and ultimately feed the population,’ he told the ABC on Wednesday.

‘So we’d be better to be working with the South African Government to make them value those white farmers, rather than trying to help them flee.’

The 42-year-old former sheep and wheat farmer, who has visited South Africa, said black South Africans lacked farming skills.

He compared the situation to that in neighbouring Zimbabwe after former dictator Robert Mugabe’s henchmen seized white-owned land in 2000.

‘The great lesson from Zimbabwe is when you value your farmers, you have food on the supermarket shelves,’ Mr Broad said.

‘The black South African farmers certainly have not proved themselves.

‘They need the skillset of the white south African farmers if they’re going to have any chance of feeding the population they’ve got.’

Liberal Democrats senator David Leyonhjelm said Australia needed to pressure the South African government to crack down on thugs assaulting white farmers.

‘Lock them up and tell everyone we need our farmers, all farmers black or white,’ he told Sky News on Thursday.

‘Because if we don’t have farmers, we don’t have farmers we don’t eat.’

‘Some of the crazy lefties at the ABC, and on The Guardian, HuffingtonPost, can express concern and draw mean cartoons about me and all the rest of it,’ he told Sydney radio 2GB presenter Ray Hadley on Thursday.

‘They don’t realise how completely dead they are to me.

‘All the criticism over the last week has meant nothing to me.’
