MPs flout ban on taking photographs inside the Commons to Tweet images of themselves packed into the voting lobbies to destroy May’s Brexit deal

  • A raft of MPs defied Commons rules to take selfies inside the Commons tonight
  • Labour MPs were packed into the No lobby alongside more than 100 Tory rebels
  • A total of 432 MPs had to march through the lobby to defy the Prime Minister
  • MPs are not allowed to Tweet images from inside the House on security grounds

MPs flouted a ban on taking photographs inside the Commons last night to give a glimpse of the revolt against Theresa May’s Brexit deal.

A raft of Labour MPs gleefully took photographs while inside the ‘No’ lobby alongside 118 Tory rebels.

Publishing photographs taken inside Parliament is generally banned on security grounds.

But MPs inflicting the worst ever defeat on a Prime Minister failed to resist temptation to revel in their victory.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle – who seized the mace during the Brexit debates – posted a picture and added: ‘In the no voting lobby to vote against this deal. I’ve rarely seen it this full. May has united the Commons against her and her deal. Next step No Confidence Now’.

Other Labour MPs tweeting images included Debbie Abrahams, Faisal Rashid and Thelma Walker - though some deleted their posts later

Not to be left, SNP vetran Pete Wishart tweeted his own image with the caption: 'The utter, utter stupidity of how we vote in the House of Commons.'

Luke Pollard tweeted a picture and said: ‘The no lobby is packed with Conservative MPs, Labour MPs as well as SNP, LibDems and more.

‘All these MPs are voting Theresa May’s Brexit deal down. It’s going to be a huge defeat for the Prime Minister.’

The scenes emerged because of how MPs are required to vote in the House of Commons.

When a division is called MPs have to physically walk through either the Aye or No lobby to cast their vote.
