Police and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched an investigation after an aircraft went down in regional Queensland.

The light aircraft crashed near the Mareeba Airport, west of Cairns, on Saturday morning about 11.15am.

Initial reports suggest their are multiple fatalities from the incident.

The Cairns Post reports that two people have died in the crash and experts are on their way to investigate. 

The light plane belongs to Cape Air Transport, an air taxi service running in the Torres Strait, according to the publication. 

The aircraft is understood to be an Angel Aircraft Corporation Model 44 Angel twin-engine light plane. 

A rescue helicopter was at the scene on Saturday along with firefighters and paramedics.  

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were on the scene at 11:30am on Saturday. 

The plane reportedly crashed into a paddock at the western end of Mareeba Airport.
