Multiple people are shot at Illinois shopping mall after hundreds of people attended illegal street takeover

At least 10 people were shot in a suburban Illinois town early Sunday morning during an apparent Juneteenth celebration. 

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honey Suckle Lane in Willowbrook, Illinois, Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander with the Tri-State Fire Protection District told WLS.

Witnesses said the large crowd of 200-300 people had gathered for a Juneteenth celebration that turned violent. 

Two people who were shot are in critical condition, according to local reports. Fire officials say others suffered ‘graze wounds.’

‘It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration; we just started hearing shooting, so we dropped down until they stopped,’ witness Markeshia Avery said. ‘They just kept going. After that, we literally scattered away.’

Emergency services have responded to the shooting near Willowbrook Shopping Mall in Illinois after gunfire erupted during an illegal street takeover attended by up to 300 people overnight.

A massive police presence remained on the scene at 5:30 a.m. and are investigating.
