Multiple people have reportedly been stabbed after a knife-wielding man went on a rampage in New Zealand.

Several residents in Auckland’s North Shore were reportedly attacked by the man on Thursday morning before he was pounced on by construction workers.

One reportedly hit the alleged stabber with a crutch which ended the rampage.

He has since been taken into custody while a large kitchen knife was also found on the road in Mairangi Bay.

One terrified witness said people were being stabbed at random, Stuff reported.

A local cafe owner said he saw a woman being attacked at the bus stop opposite his store.

He said the alleged stabber then attacked another Asian couple on Murrays Bay beach before he ran away and was apprehended by members of the public.

Another woman said he saw the man try to stab a 17-year-old girl.

Multiple people have reportedly been stabbed after a knife-wielding man went on a rampage in New Zealand

‘He stabbed two people, totally random… it all happened very quickly,’ she said.

Others at the scene said they heard loud screams and were told to flee the area.

One woman had headed down to the beach to take her dog for a walk when she was confronted by the man and his ‘big knife’.

She said the man had started walking towards her but then broke out into a run.

‘And – fight or flight – I turned away and ran the other way and I looked back and he had a big knife, running at me,’ the woman told the NZ Herald.

‘I was screaming, calling out for help because he was chasing me with this big knife.’

The woman managed to get away from the man unharmed, and immediately called police.

Police are yet to confirm the number of people injured and to what extent.

A group of mothers who were at the beach with their kids said they were told by a man to take their children and run.

‘At first I thought it was a tsunami, or something like because we’re at the beach,’ Dianne Hilbourne said.

‘We just left everything and ran.’

One Mairangi Bay resident said he saw the man being marched down the street by five members of the public who had weapons of their own. He guessed the alleged attacker was in his 20s.

‘The man more or less lay down, I know he burst out in tears, you could hear him crying. I think the realization came in,’ the resident said.
