A 35-year-old mum claims she looks so young that everyone mistakes her and her 18-year-old daughter for sisters when they go out clubbing together – leaving people ‘gobsmacked’ when she proves her age with ID.

Laura Phillips, from Stoke-on-Trent,  started clubbing with daughter Levi when she turned 18 this year but each time they go they’re bombarded with comments likening them to be siblings or friends.

The stay-at-home mother-of-four say most people she meets thinks she’s in her early twenties, and that people have even asked her daughter Reese, 16, if she’s adopted, as they ‘can’t be mother and daughter’.

But Laura, who was just 17 when she had her first child, says that the confusion is likely down to her ‘acting like a teenage’ combined with her daughter looking older than her age.

Laura said that while she’s ‘flattered’ by all the comments she says it’s like a ‘broken record’ for her two eldest girls.

She added that there’s no secrets to her youthful appearance, but that she’s ‘young at heart’ which shows on the exterior.

‘They think that we’re sisters or friends on a night out. It happens every time we go out – it usually starts in the taxi on the way to town,’ she said.

‘It happens even if we go out during the day as well, like when we’re out shopping or for pub meals.

‘When I’m on days out with all the kids they think I’m the big sister taking everybody out.

‘I have to persuade them that we’re mother and daughter – they still don’t believe me by the end of the night but I think “whatever, I’ll take that”.

‘They literally just say that they don’t believe my age and I get my ID out sometimes just to prove it. When I show them it they’re a bit gobsmacked.

‘People normally say that I look between about 20-24. It makes me think that maybe I should start lying about my age.’

Laura had her eldest daughter, Levi, shortly after she turned 17 and said they started receiving comments likening them to siblings last year.

The youthful-looking mum even said that she was ID’d while buying a cutlery  set a few months ago and was refused because she’d forgotten it and was unable to prove she’s over 16.

‘I don’t go out without my ID, I always take it. I get ID’d most times I go out, apart from the places I go where they already know who I am.

‘I already have my ID in my hand and get offended if they don’t ask, I take it as a compliment.

‘I think when it’s the same person going on and on I’m like “oh, I’ve shown you my ID, what else can I show you?”.

‘Or I show them my tattoos of their names on my hand and say “right, tell them what your name is” then I ask them why I would have their tattoo on my hand if we weren’t related?’

‘I think it’s from us looking so similar in age that people think we’re sisters, not mother and daughter. I think because we look different as well, Reese has dark hair and I’m blonde.

‘I think it’s probably because Reese does look older than her age anyway and she’s taller than me and I probably do act like I’m a teenager.

‘I think looking youthful helps [jokes]. I don’t have a secret – just act young – it shows on the outside. I’m quite young at heart, that’s about it basically.

‘I’ve always been like that. I keep thinking one day soon I’m going to mature and start acting my age, but it’s not happened yet.

‘I’d definitely say that I behave like an 18-year-old too – when I’m not with my younger kids I just let go and go back to my teenage years.’

Laura said: ‘I started going out with Levi when she turned 18 and we’ve probably had about six nights out – I even jumped on the student nights, I thought ‘I’ll try that’ because there’s cheap drinks.

‘I was excited to take Levi out for her first drink. It was a good experience because then obviously I know she can have a good night out but at the same time I’m there to keep an eye on her, or sometimes vice-versa.

‘There’s probably been times where she looks after me, but more so, me looking after her.

‘We all like the same things which is why I think it works so well – we like socialising, going out for meals and with Reese we do TikToks and go live.

‘We’re two peas in a pod, and I’m like that with both of my eldest girls.’
